COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Two people were seriously injured in a head-on crash on Interstate 70 near the Midway exit Sunday morning.

Crews received a call about a crash shortly after 1 a.m. According to Missouri State Highway Patrol crash reports, Elizabeth A. McCarthy, 23, was driving a Prius onto the interstate. After stopping at the bottom of the ramp, McCarthy apparently drove westbound in the eastbound lanes.

A semi-truck driven by 68-year-old Howard Salickram hit the Prius. Sara McCahon, 27, was a passenger in the car. She was seriously hurt as well.

Both women were transported to University Hospital.

Boone County Joint Communications Tweeted just after 1:00 a.m. Sunday, asking drivers to avoid the area:

The truck driver was not hurt, but the semi suffered extensive damage.

ABC 17 News has contacted Columbia police and fire officials for more information about the crash.
