New weapons detection system causes long delay at Rock Bridge High School

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The weapons detection system causes long delay at Rock Bridge High School in it debut for the first day of school.

Tuesday was the first day the Columbia Public School district used its new weapons detection system at all three high schools. Students outside of Rock Bridge High School were seen standing in long lines to get through the system, with the last student going through at 9:30 a.m., classes start at 8:55 a.m.

RBHS sent an email Tuesday afternoon regarding the long lines to get through the weapons detection system and what parents and student can do to help with Wednesday's start to make it run more smoothly.

The school would like student to hold items that they know will likley set off the system before they go inside. Some common items that would trigger the system are:

  • umbrellas
  • metal eyeglass containers
  • scientific calculators
  • 3-ring binders that include a metal spine
  • and laptops

These are items that students will pass to security as they walk through the system.

RBHS suggest students arrive before the large crowds get there at 8:30 a.m. to save time. The school would also like students to remove items not needed for school from their backpack the night before they come to class.
