Nashville Police: Bank card of missing MU student Riley Strain found near Cumberland River

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Metro Nashville Police Department said Sunday afternoon that missing University of Missouri student Riley Strain's bank card was found on the embankment between Gay St. and the Cumberland River.

The search continues for Strain, 22, after he was on a trip with his Delta Chi fraternity brothers when he went missing March 9 in Downtown Nashville. He was kicked out of Luke Bryan's bar, before he disappeared, according to a Nashville police missing persons report.

Police and other volunteers have searched the river for several days using sonar as one of the main methods. ABC 17 News spoke to Missouri State Highway Patrolmen Sgt. Kyle Green about the process f trying to find someone during a water search.

"If you suspect somebody has gone in the water, you're going to have your patrol boats patrol the the obviously the surface of the water and then also going along the banks," says Green. "So you may have an individual who, let's say, went in and the current or something ended up pushing them off to the side."

Green says once the surface pf the water has been searched, the next phase would be to search under the water. ABC 17 News spoke with James Hinkle who works with the organization "Beyond the Case" who assist in searching for missing people. He says that when searching a large area you have to set up a grid.

"You set up a grid underwater just like you'd set up a grid. Like if you're searching a wooded area, except it's much smaller and you just stay on a line and follow that line the cannon and have a zone. You need to clear and clear it. But you, the underwater," said Hinkle.

Strain allegedly told his friends on the phone that he was heading back to the Tempo Hotel, where they were staying. Instead, he walked in the opposite direction.

He was spotted on security video from a local vape shop at 9:45 p.m. near 2nd Avenue and Church Street. He appeared to be stumbling and holding his head.

Two minutes later, he was caught by another security camera at a crossing near Gay Street, which was the last time he is seen on video.

University of Missouri and Nashville Police are asking anyone with information on Strain's whereabouts to contact them.
