The Maries County Sheriff's Office said it hopes to identify human remains found in the Gasconade River over the weekend.

A Facebook post from the sheriff's office said the remains are likely those of a man about 50 years old. The post said it's unknown if foul play was involved and that deputies hope to learn the identity soon.

Maries County Sheriff Chris Heitman said on Sunday the remains were found in the Gasconade River. The post included the remains were likely exposed for less than a year.

The sheriff included the Osage County Sheriff's Water Division was involved in the recovery.

Osage County Sheriff Michael Bonham said he was first called about the human remains around 10:23 a.m.

Bonham said he recovered the remains about 1 mile upstream from the Belle Chutes.
