COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The MizzouRec held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday afternoon for the opening of its new outdoor fitness space.

The area was once the home of Truman's Pond, and outdoor pool located near the southeast entrance of the building before it closed in 2022.

The outdoor space will hold fitness programs including personal training and classes. The space will include squat racks, free weights, tires and more.

The space will be accessible year round because it is equipped with built in fans and heaters.

After opening the outdoor fitness space, MizzouRec Director Stephen Byrd said they are always looking to improve the center listening to feedback from students.

"We're in the service industry. And so we always welcome feedback in terms of how can it be better, how can we do more? And so that's the space alone," Byrd said. "I know there are some plans for indoors, there are space plans for our Rothwell lawn."

Byrd also plans to add more amenities to the outdoor fitness space over the next six months.
