COURT DOCUMENTS: Man admitted to Mexico shooting that killed teen
MEXICO, Mo. (KMIZ)
Court documents say a Mexico man admitted to a shooting that killed a teenager and wounded another earlier this week.
Ja'Vone Hornbeak, 18, faces two felony charges linked to the shooting that killed 17-year-old Tornez Burton and injured 17-year-old Jzyeshawn Palmer.
Hornbeak turned himself over to the Mexico Public Safety Department Thursday morning, approximately 13 hours after the shooting.
According to Hornbeak's probable cause statement, he admitted to Mexico officers that he, Burton and several others went to Garfield Park to fight multiple people including Palmer.
The court documents say Hornbeak brought a Smith and Wesson handgun with him for "protection and safety." Hornbeak alleged to officers that he fired six shots when Palmer punched Burton.
Hornbeak allegedly told Mexico officers that he shot Palmer but that it was an accident. He also denied shooting Burton saying "someone else with a gun did that," documents said.
The 18-year-old said he ran from the park and dropped the gun in the area.
Documents said officers found the gun inside a backpack which was recovered at the scene.
According to the probable cause statement, the weapon was reported stolen on March 15. The documents said Hornbeak didn't know the gun was stolen.
Online court records say Hornbeak faces a felony charge of unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action linked to the shooting.
