A man who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for killing a Lincoln University student in 2018 saw his appeal rejected on Tuesday.

Alfred Chism Jr, of Jefferson City, was sentenced in April 2023 to 25 years for second-degree murder and five years for armed-criminal action. The sentences will run consecutively. He was found guilty by a jury in January 2023.

According to previous reporting, Chism admitted to killing Charon Session in 2018, but he claimed it was in self-defense. Chism said Session had been harassing him before the shooting. Session was hit twice, the probable cause statement said, and Chism called 911 to report the shooting.

Chism, in his appeal, argued that the state produced insufficient evidence to argue that he didn’t act in self defense. The appeals court decided his argument was unfounded.
