Motion for mental exam denied for man accused in Lazy Gators shooting, has new lawyer
CAMDENTON, Mo. (KMIZ)
The state’s motion for a mental examination for a Jefferson City man accused of a 2021 Memorial Day weekend shooting at Lazy Gators was denied on Tuesday.
Chad Tariq Brewer, 31, was charged with first-degree murder, delivery of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held at the Camden County Jail without bond.
The motion for a mental exam was filed in August, a week after Brewer announced he would be representing himself.
Brewer was previously represented by Mick Henderson, who filed a motion to withdraw on Aug. 9. Brewer filed an appeal on Aug. 22 and he was ruled indigent. He is now being represented by Stacey Patterson, a public defender from Lebanon, Missouri.
A pretrial conference was scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, according to Casenet, with the jury trial been scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2024.
According to previous reporting, Brewer is accused of shooting Vonza Watson in the abdomen and killing him after a fight on May 29, 2021.
Brewer was arrested at the scene after deputies allegedly found drugs in his possession. During the investigation, detectives gathered surveillance footage that showed Brewer shooting a handgun and then leaving the scene, according to previous reporting.
