Documents: Columbia man went on rampage of attempted rape, assault before arrest

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A man charged in Boone County with five felonies went on a rampage of attempted rape and assault that started at a hotel and continued outside other businesses Wednesday night, according to a probable cause statement.

Justin M. Miller, 37, of Columbia was charged Thursday with attempted rape, child molestation, second-degree assault, sexual abuse, sexual misconduct, fourth-degree assault and resisting arrest. He was in the Boone County Jail on Friday without bond.

Miller's alleged rampage began at the La Quinta hotel on I-70 Drive S.W., where he was staying, according to the statement. The statement says Miller exposed himself to a person in an elevator then tried to rape a woman on the second floor before a witness punched him.

Miller then punched in the face an employee who confronted him about the attempted rape, according to the statement. The employee told investigators that he hit Miller with a broom and Miller then left the hotel, the statement says.

Police found Miller, who was by this time naked, outside the Petro Mart on Stadium Boulevard near Interstate 70 and arrested him after a short chase outside the Culver's restaurant on Bernadette Drive, according to the statement. Employees told ABC 17 News on Thursday that Miller went inside the restaurant without clothes. The restaurant closed early after the incident, employees said.

Miller has been in and out of prison five times over the past 15 years.

Between 2006 and 2013 Miller was arrested various times for gun and drug-related charges.

In 2020, he was arrested again and charged in three different cases on similar gun and drug crimes. He had a warrant out for his arrest for those charges after failing to appear in court in December.
