Red Cross van catches fire on Columbia road

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

An American Red Cross van caught fire on its way to a blood drive in Columbia on Thursday morning.

The van was carrying equipment for the drive at St. Thomas Parish in Jefferson City when the driver noticed the floorboard getting warm and called firefighters, regional Red Cross spokesperson Sharon Watson said.

Watson said the fire appeared to have started in the engine from a mechanical problem as the van drove down Stadium Boulevard. The driver was not hurt. No blood was on board the van.

The Red Cross is working to see if anything can be salvaged.

The van carried items including laptops, beds and blood bags to the Jefferson City drive, which had to be canceled. Watson encouraged anyone wanting to donate blood to visit drives at Tolton High School until 3 p.m. and Helias High School until 4 p.m. Thursday.
