Columbia Public Schools cancels classes for Tuesday; Dozens of districts cancel Tuesday classes

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Dozens of Mid-Missouri school districts canceled Tuesday classes as snow continued to blanket the region Monday afternoon.

Boonville, Fayette, Otterville and Pilot Grove were among the public districts that had called off Tuesday classes by 4 p.m. Monday.

Just before 8:30 p.m. Columbia Public Schools has canceled classes for Tuesday.

More than two dozen Mid-Missouri schools called off classes Monday or dismissed early.

Snow blanketed the area over the weekend, followed by plunging temperatures that sent wind chills below zero. More snow and freezing drizzle began falling Monday morning and was still falling Monday afternoon, making word conditions deteriorate quickly as temperatures hovered in the mid-teens.

Another round of wintry precipitation is possible later this week.

The Jefferson City School District said just before noon Monday that it would dismiss two hours early. After-school child care programs were closed.

Road crews continued their work Monday morning after a busy weekend. Columbia Public Works said its crews were in at 9:30 a.m. The Missouri Department of Transportation's traveler information map showed several state highways in Mid-Missouri were partially covered or covered with snow at mid-morning.
