MODOT reminds drivers to travel safely this winter
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Missouri Department of Travel's website has guidance for drivers as winter weather creeps into Mid-Missouri.
MODOT is reminding drivers of precautions and measures they can take before and during their trip, as well as what to have in your vehicle.
Before the trip, the department advises checking current road conditions. If roads haven't been plowed or treated MODOT said to postpone your trip if possible.
Driver's are also asked to do a pre-trip inspection of their vehicle, paying special attention to make sure you don't have a flat tire, low brakes or bad windshield wipers.
Checking to make sure you have a full battery is also recommended.
Once you're on the road, pay attention to road conditions and adjust your speed and driving accordingly.
Give snowplows plenty of room, and don't pass them. Also be watchful for other cars having problems with road conditions.
The Department of Travel is also reminding drivers that the most dangerous temperature to drive in is near 32 degrees.
Keep your gas tank at least half full, and remember you can always pull off to the side of the road if driving conditions get too unsafe.
The department also has a list of items to keep in your vehicle.
These include items such as blankets, a first aid kit, a flashlight, a shovel, jumper cables and bottled water.
MODOT said a small sack of sand to use for traction in icy conditions could also be helpful.
If you get trapped in your car, stay in your vehicle.
MODOT said It's easy to become disoriented and lost in blowing and drifting snow if you leave your vehicle for help.
If you're trapped, run the engine for about 10 minutes each hour. Run the heater and turn on the dome light only when the vehicle is running.
If your car isn't running, move around occasionally and avoid staying in one spot. You can also huddle together for warmth if more than one person is in the car.
