Residential curbside collection with roll carts to begin Monday
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The City of Columbia will begin its residential curbside refuse collection service with roll carts on Monday for all residential routes, and there are some rules for how residents may use them.
According to the city's website, roll carts should be placed at the curb no earlier than 4 p.m. the day before your collection and no later than 6:30 a.m. the day of collection.
After refuse is collected, roll carts must be removed from the curb no later than 10 p.m. that day.
All trash must be inside the roll carts with the lid closed to be collected. If the cart is overflowing or there is trash outside of the cart, it will not be collected, the city says.
Customers who need their cart emptied immediately or can't wait until their scheduled collection gate can request additional cart collection for a fee. A 35-gallon roll cart additional pickup will cost $7.70, 65-gallon will cost $12.20 and 95-gallon carts will cost a fee of $16.70.
On non-collection days, roll carts must be placed inside your home or close to it.
As for recycling, that cannot go in your roll cart Monday. Recycling curbside pickup will resume on an every-other-week basis beginning March 18.
The city told ABC 17 News that at least 5,000 roll carts were distributed to residents.
If you need a larger or different-sized roll cart, you can exchange one time at no charge within the first 120 days of receiving your roll cart. After 120 days, you will be charged a $25 exchange fee per cart.
The city hopes to switch to automated curbside refuse collection will improve working conditions and the safety of their employees. They also hope this will help retain staff to continue providing the service to the community.
