Boone County property taxes due Sunday night

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Sunday is the final day for Boone County residents to pay their property taxes without receiving a late penalty or fee.

The Boone County Assessors Office will be accepting taxes until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31. In-person drop offs are no longer available, but there are still multiple ways to pay.

According to a news release, residents can go to the 24-hour drop box at the 9th St. entrance of the Boone County Collector's Office. Residents can also pay online with a credit card or e-check on the Collector's website.

If residents are using a credit card a convenience fee of 2.3% will be added to the total bill with a minimum fee if $1.50. The office does not retain any of these fees. E-checks will also have a flat fee of $1.50 per payment.

When paying over the phone, officials are asking taxpayers to have their bill number ready and use the jurisdiction code 3517. Officials say people with technical difficulties with making payments online or over the phone, will not have pay extension. Late fees and penalties will be applied.

Residents can still mail in property taxes, but will likely receive a late fee due to the U.S. Post Office being closed on Sunday.

Late fees will go up on the first of each month beginning Jan. 1 until the full bill is paid.

According to a Boone County Assessor, out of the 54,000 change notices sent out this year to Boone County residents, only 422 properties were appealed.

252 properties saw change to their value. That is only .4% of all the change notices sent.

2023 appeals led to $2.4 million in lower assessed values of properties throughout the county.

142 people went through an informal appeals process by calling the assessor, while 280 went through the formal assessment through the Boone County Board of Equalization.

170 property appeals saw no change at all.
