Hallsville is a new team, under new conditions, with the same goal
HALLSVILLE, Mo (KMIZ)
The Hallsville Indians are working to repeat the most historic season in town history, but under much different conditions than years past.
In 2019, the Indians claimed the town's first district title under new head coach, Justin Conyers.
Conyers is still with the team, however, the 16 seniors who helped him get there, are not.
“We don’t have one returner on offense right now," he said.
Conyers said the key to the season is going to be the development of those young players.
“A lot of youth out there, but everybody’s just really starting to get it and we’re really starting to click," he said.
Much like others around the state, Conyers said COVID-19 is adding a lot of weight to the season.
“The crazy thing that you’ve got to worry about right now, is if a kid does test positive for COVID and the return-to-play for them that has to be done. There’s potential of a 14-day quarantine and then MSHSAA has a mandated 7-day return-to-play, so you’re looking at potentially 21 days without some of your starters if this happens," he said. "For us being a young program, we really need these guys in there to get these reps, so if something like that does happen to us, it could be devastating to a smaller class school like us.”
But, no matter how much the world around the Indians has changed, one thing has remained the same.
“Here’s how it goes is: number one is set ourselves up for the potential to compete for a district title," Conyers said.
