Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts make Super Bowl history

GLENDALE, Ariz. (KMIZ)

When Super Bowl LVII kicks off on Sunday evening, it will mark the first time that two Black quarterbacks have faced off in the championship game, as Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts battle for the Lombardi Trophy.

"It's a historic moment, with two historic football teams," Mahomes said on Opening Night. "So many people laid the foundation before us."

It will be Mahomes' third trip to the big game and Hurts' first. Although they will be standing on opposite sidelines, the two did come together on Monday's Opening Night festivities to acknowledge history.

"You're on the world stage and to have two black quarterbacks playing the quarterback position at a very high level and consistently playing great football, just shows that, in football and in society, we're moving forward," Mahomes said.

Hurts added that it's an honor to be a part of such a monumental moment in NFL history.

Sunday's history comes nearly three decades after former Washington quarterback Doug Williams became the first Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl. He led his team to that title in 1988. After that, Russell Wilson was the next Black quarterback to lift up a Lombardi trophy.

If Hurts and the Eagles take down the Chiefs, he will become the fourth Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl ring, in addition to Mahomes.
