Callaway County will stop paying its suspended sheriff, Clay Chism, next month.

Presiding Commissioner Gary Jungermann said Thursday that Chism's last paycheck will be cut Feb. 1. The pay will be suspended until his status with the county is resolved.

Chism is in limbo after pleading guilty to misdemeanor DWI in December. He was originally charged with DWI and resisting arrest for an incident in the parking lot of the Moberly Arby's on Oct. 6, 2022. Police say Chism was drunk but refused a breath test and struggled with officers.

Chism was removed from his position as the active Callaway County Sheriff in June after his peace officer’s license was suspended, amid allegations of drinking and buying alcohol while on the job. His license remains suspended. Darryl Maylee was appointed interim sheriff.

The county has paid Chism more than $78,000 and his most recent paycheck was issued Jan. 12 for more than $5,500, according to HR director Leah Laramore.

A hearing on the status of his license was recently moved to April.

Chism maintains an active campaign committee.
