Columbia Police Department to hear community feedback on Axon technology Monday

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Columbia Police Department will hold two meetings on Monday to gather community feedback on renewing and upgrading its Axon technology package.

Community members will have two opportunities to listen and provide feedback:

  • 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the Molly Thomas Bowden Neighborhood Policing Center, 1204 International Dr.
  • 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Columbia City Hall Conference Rooms 1A/1B, 701 E. Broadway

CPD staff members and representatives with Axon will explain how the technology works and go over the benefits of using it. They will also discuss the polices for the technology to make sure it is being used responsibly, according to the City of Columbia press release.

In these meetings, several pieces of tech will be looked at, including in-car cameras with automatic license plate recognition, body warn cameras, evidence management and more.

Axon in-car camera with license plate recognition technology is to assist officers in identifying stolen vehicles, locating wanted suspects and improving overall law enforcement efficiency while maintaining a high standard of privacy, data protection and accountability through transparent comprehensive auditing. This technology does not capture identifiable images of people or their faces and does not use facial recognition technology

Axon body worn cameras and in-car cameras activate automatically in response to specific triggers such as drawing Tasers, handguns and activation of emergency lights or sirens. This design is mitigate the risk os missed recordings and improve officer accountability.

Axon's Evidence Management system includes Auto-Tagging Technology which enhances digital evidence management and officer accountability by automatically applying metadata like case numbers, locations, and timestamps to recordings so they are properly retained.

The Department has been utilizing Axon Tasers since 2005 and Axon body worn cameras and Evidence Management since 2014.
