COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Winter weather and extreme cold has arrived in Mid-Missouri and there are some tips that will help you get through the winter.

You can prepare for extreme winter weather by making a winter car survival kit according to the National Weather Service. You will need jumper cables, flash lights, a first aid kit, blanket, non-perishable food, water, and cat litter or sand to help with tire traction.

You will also want to check your local weather forecast and look at the times of your normal routine so you know what yo expect. If possible, avoid being outside during the coldest part of the day, which is typically early morning.

If you have children, make sure you find a warm spot for them while they are waiting for the school bus. To protect your pets, livestock and other property, see to it that they aren't overly exposed to the extreme cold and give them plenty of food and water that is not frozen.

Take precautions to ensure your pipes don't freeze and know the temperature thresholds of your plants and crops.
