Woman accused in the death of an infant set to face a judge Monday

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The woman accused in the death of in infant is set to face a Boone County judge Monday.

Lavosha Daniels, 32, of Independence – who is the mother of the baby -- was charged with abandoning a corpse and first-degree endangering the welfare of a child. Samone Daniels, who was 4-5 months old, was found dead outside of a tire store in 2019.

She is being held at the Boone County Jail. Her bond was previously lowered to $500,000 in June 2023 and it is now currently $100,000.

The child was killed after they were allegedly strangled by Staffone Fountain.

Staffone Fountain, 32, of Independence, Missouri, was originally charged with first-degree murder and abandoning a corpse. He pleaded guilty in August to abandoning a corpse and first-degree involuntary manslaughter. 

The state recommended a four-year sentence for abandoning a corpse and seven years for involuntary manslaughter, which will be concurrent.

Former Columbia Police Department Chief Geoff Jones said in June 2022 that the baby died two years before her remains were discovered inside a bag behind a business on Providence Road in Columbia in 2019.
