Columbia Police investigate shooting in area of homeless camp near I-70/Highway 63 connector

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A man was shot early Wednesday in the area of a homeless camp near the intersection of two busy highways in Columbia.

Officers found the person with gunshot wounds that were not life threatening after being called to the area near the Highway 63/Interstate 70 connector a little after 1 a.m., a Columbia Police Department spokeswoman said in an email.

An ABC 17 News reporter saw several Columbia police officers investigating a homeless camp near the I-70/ Highway 63 connector. This is the same location the city is planning to start cleaning up on Monday, after getting a warning from the state about the homeless camp polluting the nearby Hinkson Creek.

When ABC 17 News crews arrived on the scene around 2 a.m., at least nine police units were seen in the area along Highway 63 north.

Officers searched the homeless camp in a wooded area with flashlights for at least 45 minutes. At one point, one officer could also be seen pulling down some type of yellow tape.

CPD says at this time there is no suspect information and detectives are investigating the incident.
