SEDALIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The cause of a Tuesday night fire at a Sedalia restaurant started in a trash can, according to a Thursday social media post from the Sedalia Fire Department.

No one was injured in the fire, according to previous reporting. The fire – which occurred at a Long John Silver’s in the 900 block of South Limit Street – originated in “a trash can that grew until it was recognized when smoke and fire began venting from the roof,” the post reads.

“Although fire alarm systems and sprinkler systems are not required by code in smaller restaurants, this is a great example of how easily a small fire can progress quickly and result in a large loss,” the post says.

The department previously said that there was significant damage in the kitchen and roof above the kitchen, as well as smoke, heat and water damage throughout the building.
