Easter spending slightly down from last year
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The total spending for Easter is slightly down this year after it increased the past few years reaching its highest peak in 2023 with $24 billion, according to the National Retail Federation.
A survey conducted by the National Retail Federation and Proper Insights and Analytics showed that consumer spending is expected to reach $22.4 billion this Easter.
In 2022 people spent $20.8 billion during Easter before that number jumped to $24 billion in 2023. There is a slight decrease to $22.4 billion this year.
In the survey conducted by the National Retail Federation, 81% of Americans plan to celebrate Easter, that number did not change compared to last Easter. Americans could spend an average of $177.06 per person, making that cost the third highest in the survey's history.
Grocery shopper Ellen Williams said that groceries in general are just getting more expensive.
"I have adjusted things maybe to make things make more sense for myself that instead of going and doing the one big shopping sprints, you know, spree and I would normally spend a couple of hundred dollars, now I'm going multiple times a week and still spending about $100 each trip," Williams said.
Not only do people mostly spend their money on food during this holiday they also spend it on candy. The NRF survey showed that 89% of Americans spend money on food and candy for Easter.
Shopping for Easter chocolate might hurt some shoppers pockets after the retail price of chocolate rose 11.6% in 2023, according to reporting from CNN. The price hike is due to the cocoa supply decreasing in West Africa due to poor climate and crop diseases.
