WHAT’S GOING AROUND: Cases of influenza, COVID-19 increase after holidays
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Cases of several viruses have increased in Mid-Missouri since the holidays wrapped up a few weeks ago.
MU Health Care
At MU Health Care facilities Dr. Laura Morris said they have seen an increase in visits for respiratory symptoms, infections and testing.
Morris said the holidays did bring a couple viral infections to the forefront which includes norovirus, influenza, RSV and COVID- 19.
However, MU Health Care says it has seen stable numbers of patients with COVID-19 in the hospital with an increase in influenza hospital admissions since Mid-December.
Boone Health
ABC 17 News reached out to Boone Health to see what viruses they are seeing patients come in with the most.
Dr. Robin Blount says their facilities have seen an increase in the flu, COVID-19 and walking pneumonia.
Jefferson City Medical Group-Fulton
Over in Callaway County, the Jefferson City Medical Group in Fulton said it has also seen an increase in the flu and COVID-19.
Overall in Boone County for the flu, The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services says there has been an increase in flu cases, from 72 to 120 from the beginning of December to the beginning of January.
Across the state, flu cases peaked with 6,371 in the third week of December and saw a slight dip entering into January with 4,790 cases.
Doctors want to remind you if you are feeling sick it's best to stay home and wear a mask to prevent others from getting sick.
Patients with underlying health conditions or who are young or elderly are encouraged to seek care early
They also say it's not too late to get your flu shot or COVID-19 vaccine.
