The recruitment process has already begun for William Woods newly appointed band director, as the university is set to start its first band program in the school's 150 year history.

According to the university's press release last week, the school is looking for at least 18 members for the band's first year. But the band's director, Alex Kirby, said so far there are currently enrolled students interested.

Kirby -- who is an assistant professor of music at the university -- said the first step was to get the word out.

He began recruiting students on campus and also spoke with high school band directors across the state.

"I've been very busy going out and recruiting and visiting quite a few (high) schools. I probably hit 15 or 16 schools so far this school year, just recruiting for band and choir, which is fun because a lot of those directors are my friends," Kirby said.

The university said adding an official band will add to the campus' culture, build school spirit and provide new arts opportunities for its prospective students.

Kirby added that a band can provide a home for some students who might struggle finding that on campus.

"It's just, it's a really exciting time because when you look at what band can add, to not only just a sporting event, but the campus community," he said. "It just adds so much vibrancy to the campus, more in-depth focus on the arts and excitement and excitement at basketball and football sporting events."

The band will make its debut as a marching band along side the university's inaugural football next fall. The band will then transition to a pep and concert band for the remainder of the year.
