COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Boone County firefighters responded to an area between Interstate 70 and the 700 block of Demaret Drive at 6:10 p.m. Thursday after fire was seen.

The fire was under control within 15 minutes, according to Boone County Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Gale Blomenkamp.

The fire was caused by fireworks. Blomenkamp told ABC 17 News that if conditions continue to get worse, a burn ban could be issued.

A number of Mid-Missouri cities and counties have issued burn bans this week as extreme heat and drought conditions continue to hit the area. Several cities have either canceled or postponed their Independence Day fireworks celebrations due to weather conditions.
