JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A groundbreaking ceremony scheduled Tuesday for a Jefferson City early childhood learning center was canceled because of weather.

Rain is forecast to continue through the day on Tuesday. Jefferson City School District officials said in an email to news outlets that the weather caused the cancellation.

The center will increase the number of students served from 150 to 300 out of 600 annual graduates, according to the district. A Jefferson City bond issue called Kids FIRST passed with approval from 68% of votes last April.

That vote led to the building of the early childhood center and other projects and updates within the school district.

The school district says children who go to preschool have a greater chance of academic success and are more likely to graduate, attend college and avoid unemployment.

The district hopes this center will be open by the 2025-2026 school year.
