Frigid cold leads to area schools to call off Tuesday classes; Columbia Public Schools to have late start

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Dangerously cold temperatures have led to a number of area schools to either call off classes on Tuesday or have a late start.
Overnight wind chills in parts of Mid-Missouri are expected to hit minus-20 degrees, according to the ABC 17 News Stormtrack Weather Team, who issued a Weather Alert Day for Monday and Tuesday.
The Jefferson City School District announced on Tuesday classes will not be in session as originally planned. An email from the district said the bus operator could not get buses running as normal due to the cold temperatures.
Columbia Public Schools spokesperson Michelle Baumstark tweeted that the district would have a two-hour delay on Tuesday.
"Columbia Public Schools will have a 2-hour delayed start tomorrow, Tuesday, January 21, 2025. This means buses will pick up two hours later than their original scheduled pick-up time," the post says.
Late start times are on the district's website.
