Family, friends of victim say second body found in Fulton was home invader

EDITOR'S NOTE: The second body was found near the scene of the home invasion, not at the scene.

FULTON, Mo. (KMIZ)

A person found dead this morning had been wounded and hiding after perpetrating a deadly home invasion late Monday in Fulton, friends and family of the victims say.

Police on Tuesday morning found a male body near the previous crime scene in the 300 block of West Ninth Street in Fulton but have not given details about how it got there or how the person died.

According to the Fulton Police Department, officers responded to the 300 block of West Ninth Street shortly before 9 p.m. for reports of shots fired.

When they arrived at the scene, police found two men with gunshot wounds. One of them, 58 years old, died at a hospital in Columbia. The other victim, a 33-year-old man, was shot in the leg. He was taken to a hospital in a private vehicle.

"This type of event here in Fulton is rare this is an out-of-the-ordinary incident", Fulton Police Chief Bill Ladwig said Tuesday morning.

According to a news release, someone broke into a home on the street and assaulted a woman before shooting the two men. FPD did not release the names of the victims.

Fulton Police Chief Bill Ladwig said Tuesday morning that a second body had been found at a nearby scene but it's not clear whether it is related to the home invasion. Ladwig said police did not see the second body Monday night.

But friends and family of the 33-year-old man hurt in the incident, who asked to not be identified by name, say the second body belongs to the home intruder. The intruder was wounded and hid under a deck before crawling away and dying at some point, they said.

Another witness said after the invader entered the home and allegedly beat a woman with a pipe and a gun. The woman's son, the 33-year-old man was called over to defend his mom. When the son arrived he was shot and wounded. A witness said the 58-year-old man who was killed was a friend of the family but was later shot and wounded.

Witnesses say the 58-year-old man who was killed was a friend of the family and was shot trying to save both victims.

Fulton police did not release any suspect information. Fulton Police Chief Bill Ladwig said over the phone that the department believes someone in the community knows something about the incident and hopes they come forward.

Police say an update about the investigation isn't likely to come until tomorrow.
