The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday a St. Louis man was arrested on suspicion of a shooting on Interstate 70 West.

Kenneth C. McKnight, 23, is suspected of shooting a woman after a vehicle they were in crashed near the Danville exit on I-70.

Montgomery County Sheriff Craig Allison said in a social media post on the sheriff's office Facebook page that deputies arrived on scene around 7:30 p.m. Deputies said McKnight was behind the vehicle and a woman crawling on the ground saying she had been shot.

The post said deputies had a short standoff with McKnight but he was arrested. Crews were then able to give first aid to the woman -- she was later taken to a Columbia hospital with critical injuries, deputies said. Authorities included she is expected to make a full recovery.

Deputies did not provide the woman's name.

McKnight was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault and armed criminal action, he was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on a 24-hour hold, Allison said.

The sheriff said deputies are still investigating the shooting. As of Wednesday afternoon, Montgomery County prosecutors have not charged McKnight, according to online records.
