Weekend shooting in Columbia began with domestic strife, documents say
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A jealous ex-lover was responsible for the shooting that sent a man to the hospital early Sunday in Columbia, police say in court documents.
Kadean S. Cunningham, 21, of Columbia, is charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action and second-degree domestic assault. He is accused of shooting a man in the thigh during a scuffle on Jacobs Place just after midnight Sunday.
Investigators say Cunningham's romantic interest, who was trying to kick him out of her home, went to a restaurant on foot at about 10 p.m. Saturday and met the victim. Cunningham allegedly confronted them on the way back to the Jacob's Place residence.
The woman had gotten a restraining order against Cunningham just days before after he reportedly assaulted her multiple times, the probable cause statement says. The woman had texted Cunningham telling him to leave her residence just before the shooting, police say.
A fight ensued and Cunningham shot the man and assaulted the woman, according to the victims' statements. Cunningham claimed self-defense. He told investigators that the gun belonged to the shooting victim and that the man was shot during a struggle for the weapon.
The man who had been shot also told investigators that Cunningham kicked and hit him in the head after the shooting.
Cunningham told police that the shooting victim had hit him in the head with the pistol, too, according to the probable cause statement.
Cunningham was in the Boone County Jail on Monday without bond. His initial hearing was set for 1 p.m. before Judge Tracy Gonzalez.
