Holts Summit man charged after allegedly assaulting two men at Columbia bar with hammer
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Holts Summit man was charged after he was accused of attacking two men with a hammer at a Columbia bar on Jan. 31.
Kurtis Hoener was charged with first-degree assault causing serious physical injury, first-degree assault and armed criminal action. A warrant for his arrest was requested on Wednesday and a motion was filed to hold him without bond. He was not listed on the Boone County Jail roster on Wednesday evening.
According to the probable cause statement, an emergency room nurse at Boone Hospital had said they had a patient who was assaulted with a hammer. A man with the victim stated the two got in a fight at Black and Gold Bar with two other men after an argument escalated, the statement says. The man said one of the men in the fight grabbed a hammer from his vehicle and hit the two repeatedly, the statement says.
The man who spoke with police had underneath hit lip and was still bleeding, court documents say. The man did not identify Hoener and said he didn’t know him, the statement says. The other man who was assaulted was not able to speak clearly because of the attack, the court document says. That man’s head was completely wrapped with gauze and was still bleeding, according to the statement.
Police contacted the owner of the bar, who identified Hoener because he left his credit card at the bar, the statement says. The owner also showed a receipt for transactions on Hoener’s credit card, as well as video footage of the incident, court documents say. The video was dated about 30 minutes before police talked to the men who were hit with a hammer, the statement says.
According to the probable cause statement, footage allegedly showed Hoener standing near his motorcycle concealing a hammer in a “biker-style” vest. The statement says the men – who ended up in the hospital – were arguing with a man with a long beard. The man with the long beard allegedly pushed one of the men against the wall, the statement says.
Hoener allegedly pulled out the hammer while speaking with the other man and an argument started, court documents say. Hoener then hit two men with the hammer in the head and face several times and stood over one of them while hitting him “full force approximately eight more times,” court documents say.
The statement says Hoener then got on his motorcycle and left. Court documents note that he was not attacked in the video prior to hitting the men with a hammer.
Hoener was also sentenced to five years of probation after pleading guilty on June 13, 2022, to third-degree domestic assault and first-degree property damage. A probation citation report was filed on Feb. 26.
