Johnson County prosecutors file charges in Warrensburg killings
WARRENSBURG, Mo. (KMIZ)
Prosecutors have charged a Johnson County man with murder after he was accused of shooting and killing two people.
Johnathan Goodwin Jr. was named as a person of interest in a homicide investigation on Nov. 9 and was arrested two days later. He is currently being held at the Johnson County Jail without bond.
He was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, armed criminal action, felony murder and one count of unlawful use of a weapon.
According to the probable cause statement, Goodwin was in an argument with the two victims inside a camper. Detectives said a witness reported one of the victims calling them during the argument.
The witness allegedly arrived at the camper and said they were approached by the second victim, who had been shot. The person said the victim fell to the ground.
The statement says witnesses two witnesses told investigators that Goodwin walked away from the camper, past both of them and the second victim's body before leaving the property.
A third witness who was inside the camper and saw the argument allegedly told police that victim one pulled a semi-automatic handgun on Goodwin. Goodwin then allegedly took the gun and reportedly shot it three to four times.
The statement said the third witness was interviewed by police earlier in the day and "did not provide truthful information as to the identity of the shooter."
Police found both victims at the crime scene. One was found dead inside the camper. The second was taken by an ambulance to Western Missouri Medical Center where they were pronounced dead.
Goodwin was charged with third-degree assault in July after he punched a person in the face. The probable cause statement in the murder case says witness three was recently seen with bruises reportedly from Goodwin.
No court date has been set.
