A mental examination was ordered for a Jefferson City man accused of a 2021 Memorial Day weekend shooting at Lazy Gators.

Chad Tariq Brewer, 31, was charged with first-degree murder, delivery of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held at the Camden County Jail without bond.

The motion for a mental exam was filed a week after Brewer announced he would be representing himself. According to Casenet, Brewer was told it would be a mistake to proceed without an attorney. The motion hearing is set for 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Brewer was previously represented by Mick Henderson, who filed a motion to withdraw on Aug. 9.

A pretrial conference is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, according to Casenet, with the jury trial beginning 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2024.

According to previous reporting, Brewer is accused of shooting Vonza Watson in the abdomen and killing him after a fight on May 29, 2021.

Brewer was arrested at the scene after deputies allegedly found drugs in his possession. During the investigation, detectives gathered surveillance footage that showed Brewer shooting a handgun and then leaving the scene, according to previous reporting.
