COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Deputies have identified a suspect in a shooting early Saturday in southern Boone County.

The Boone County Sheriff's Office says Dustin L. Higgins, 33, of Fulton is wanted for the shooting. Higgins is wanted on a no-bond warrant for first-degree assault and armed criminal action. The sheriff's office says Higgins's whereabouts are unknown.

"Although there is no reason to believe Higgins poses a specific threat to the general public he is accused of shooting another individual ..." the sheriff's office wrote in a Facebook post. People should contact authorities instead of approaching Higgins if they see him, the post says.

Deputies were called to the 16000 block of South James Sapp Road near Ashland at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday and found a man who had been shot, possibly at a nearby residence. The sheriff's office didn't say what led investigators to Higgins.
