CPD hosts active-shooter response training
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Columbia Police Department hosted an "active assailant" response training to the public at its regional training center Friday.
People throughout the community registered to attend this training so they know what to do if there is ever an active shooter.
A press release from earlier this week describes an active assailant as “a person or persons who, intentionally, through use of a knife, a gun, a car, truck or other weapon try to inflict high numbers of death or injury on other people.” This comes after a mass shooting in Maine left at least 18 people dead.
Organizers of the event told ABC 17 News that residents request the training, and that there is usually an uptick in request after a mass shooting, such as the one in Maine. Area law-enforcement agencies, including CPD, have held training sessions in the past.
The training showed those who attended the process of planning for and reacting to an armed intruder and going through the decisions people need to make during a life threatening event.
“Similar to a fire drill. We just want people to be prepared. We don’t want people to be scared. We just want people to have a plan of what to do in the event of one of these occurrences,” Training Coordinator Michael Hestir said.
