COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Columbia Police Department will host a training session Friday on how to respond to an “active assailant situation,” according to a Tuesday release from the department.

The release describes an active assailant as “a person or persons who, intentionally, through use of a knife, a gun, a car, truck or other weapon try to inflict high numbers of death or injury on other people.” This comes after a mass shooting in Maine left at least 18 people dead.

The training session will be held 10-11:30 a.m. Friday at the CPD Regional Training Center on 5001 Meyer Industrial Drive. Area law-enforcement agencies, including CPD, have held training sessions in the past.

Residents can register for the event online. The release states that no filming is allowed and weapons are prohibited.
