Second man charged in relation to April Hy-Vee gas station shooting

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A second man was charged Wednesday in relation to a shooting that occurred last month at the Conley Road Hy-Vee gas station.

Royelle D. Hunt, 34, is charged with unlawful possession of a gun, unlawful use of a weapon and armed-criminal action. An initial court appearance is set for 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Boone County Courthouse.

Another man was charged in April. Kentrail Taylor, 27, was charged with three counts of first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, four counts of armed criminal action, first-degree property damage and endangering the welfare of a child. He is being held in the Boone County Jail without bond. An arraignment was held Monday and his next hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. Friday, June 12 at the Boone County Courthouse.

Columbia police arrested Hunt and Taylor in April. Hunt was released after posting bond.

According to a probable cause statement, when Taylor is seen on Hy-vee security camera footage walking out of the gas station back to his car, Royelle D. Hunt, 34, pulls up and gets out of a different car.

Hunt could be seen wearing a bulletproof vest and holding a silver handgun, police say. According to the probable cause statement, Hunt tucked the gun in his waistband and began to approach Taylor, clutching it.

The probable cause statement says a woman pulls up in a vehicle and tried to get Hunt to stop confronting Taylor.

Hunt and another person was allegedly seen on security footage standing by an SUV and then ducking and taking cover behind his vehicle. Both were seen limping after the shooting. Hunt was later identified by detectives and officers at Boone Hospital Emergency after it was learned there were people with gunshot wounds. He was also identified as the driver of a white SUV.

Police identified Taylor after questioning a woman who ran into a nearby Aldi store after Taylor parked the car there, the statement says. Taylor ran toward the Columbia Country Club, police say.

The woman told police she picked up Taylor at Snead and Demaret drives to give him a ride. The confrontation happened when they went to the gas station, the statement says, and Taylor began shooting from her car.
