Two officers hurt in fight at Boonville prison

BOONVILLE, Mo. (KMIZ)

Multiple prison officers were injured after a fight broke out at the Boonville Correctional Center last week.

Missouri Department of Corrections spokeswoman Karen Pojmann said at least two officers were hurt and more than a dozen inmates were involved in the incident.

According to an email from Pojmann, three inmates started fighting in a housing unit at the facility around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday night.

The spokeswoman said a separate group of inmates rushed the prison authorities as they escorted those fighting out of the unit.

Pojmann said doors, a security camera and a window were damaged in the fight. She said at least 16 inmates were involved in the incident and separated from the housing unit.

The prison's emergency response team was called in and stopped the incident, Pojmann's email said.

One officer's nose was broken, another had head injuries and five others were involved in the incident but not hurt, prison officials said.

It's unclear if any inmates were hurt.

Pojmann said conduct violations were issued for all of the inmates and each could face additional charges.

It's unknown what caused the initial fight in the unit. Pojmann said an investigation is underway.
