Time is running out for seniors to apply for Boone County’s property tax relief program
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Boone County seniors interested in getting a property tax credit only have a few days left to apply.
The deadline to apply for the Boone County Senior Real Estate Tax Relief Program is Tuesday, Oct. 1. The county's website said applications must be received in the Collector's Office by 5 p.m.
The program will exempt seniors from certain property tax increases. The county's website said eligible seniors will get a tax credit equal to the difference between the current years tax liability and the tax liability on that property when the applicant became an eligible taxpayer.
Eligible taxpayers this year will see their tax credits applied to their 2025 real estate tax statement.
As of Sept. 18, more than 5,600 Boone County seniors applied for the program, according to a press release from the Boone County Commission.
To be eligible for the program, people must be at least 62 years old, own property or have an equitable interest in property in Boone County and be responsible for the real property taxes on that property.
Applications can be found on the county's website or in person at the Boone County Collector's office at 801 E. Walnut Street. They must be signed in the presence of a notary public.
People must apply for the program annually.
The program was approved by Boone County voters in April. A state law allowing the senior property tax freeze went into effect in 2023.
