COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The six Missouri Task Force One members that were deployed to Hawaii are back home.

The four human remains detection K-9s and their handlers worked in what is described as harsh conditions to search for any human remains.

The dogs were equipped with small boots to protect their feet from the ash, along with any hidden nails, debris or glass.

"But to have the dogs work with the teams that were on the ground, to be able to cover very systematically all of the area so that every structure was touched and searched by a dog," Kathleen Kelsey, of Missouri Task Force One, said.

The two members of the incident support team worked to manage, track, plan and coordinate with local first responders for the urban-search-and-rescue members on the island.

On Monday, 45 members of Task Force One were deployed to Pensacola, Florida, to assist with Hurricane Idalia relief.
