Boone County Sheriff’s Department receives national accreditation
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Boone County Commissioners awarded the sheriff's department with a national accreditation during Thursday's commission meeting.
The Boone County Sheriff's Department joined a small group in Missouri after receiving the CALEA accreditation.
CALEA, the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, was created in 1979 to credential law enforcement agencies that have met a variety of standards, according to the commission's website.
Law enforcement agencies are required to complete a five-step process to receive the award.
Sheriff's department spokesman Sgt. Brian Leer said after the meeting the department will have to through the accreditation process annually.
The sheriff's department is the only law enforcement agency in the state to receive national accreditations for the department and jail.
The Boone County Jail received the NIJO, National Institute for Jail Operations, award in August 2019.
