BOONE COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Two people were hurt when a vehicle crossed the center line and hit another vehicle head-on Wednesday on Route WW just east of Columbia.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a Toyota Camry driven by Matthew Akins, 31, of St. James, was heading east on Route WW at North Fork Creek when it crossed the line. Akins' vehicle hit a Toyota RAV-4 driven by Drew Smith, 19, of Liberty, Missouri head-on, the patrol reported.

Smith and Akins each were taken by ambulance to University of Missouri hospital with moderate injuries.

Smith's SUV was left with its back end hanging off the bridge at the creek.

The crash temporarily closed the road.

The Boone County Fire Protection District said in social media posts that both drivers had to be pulled from their vehicles.

Fire district Assistant Chief Gale Blomenkamp said firefighters had to secure the SUV to a truck to keep it from falling over the side of the bridge.
