St. Louis County man accused of killing mother of his kids

CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) — A St. Louis County man is accused of killing the mother of his children. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 23-year-old Shavonta M. Wharton of Overland was charged Feb. 22 with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the Feb. 20 shooting death of 22-year-old Shy’Annya Gillespie. Police called to Wharton’s apartment found Gillespie shot in the chest. She died later at a hospital. A female witness told police she and Wharton were inside Wharton’s apartment when they heard someone knocking and kicking the door. Charges say Wharton opened the door and fired shots, then allegedly ran back inside saying he’d shot the mother of his children.
