Report: Boone County inmate dies after meth intoxication

The cause of death for a man who died at the Boone County jail in August was determined to be severe methamphetamine intoxication.
William Gipson, 43, of Ashland, died at the Boone County jail on August 23. Boone County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that he died in custody at the Boone County Jail.
According to a report from the Boone County Medical Examiner's Office Death Investigator Gipson's death was an accident caused by methamphetamine intoxication.
The report states Gipson had been arrested and was being booked when he put something in his mouth and then became uncooperative. He became unresponsive shortly after.
He was unsuccessfully resuscitated by EMS, according to the report. The toxicology report states presumptive positive results of Naloxone also known as NARCAN in his blood.
The toxicology report states his blood tested positive for opioids including Buprenorphine and Norbuprenorphine along with Amphetamine and meth.
The report states a peak blood concentration of meth of 20 ng/mL was reported after 2.5 hours after taking 12.5 mg orally. Gipson's blood had 3700 ng/mL, 125 times that amount.
The report states that .62 ng/mL of buprenorphine was detected in his system while the report limit is 0.50 ng/mL.
"In 20 fatalities where buprenorphine was detected, blood concentrations were 1.1-29 ng/mL," the medical examiner wrote in the report. "Other drugs were present in 19 cases, 18 of which were positive for benzodiazepines, primarily nordiazepam."
The autopsy report states Gipson had several blunt force injuries including small cuts on his left cheek, upper back, right wrist and left leg. He also had a fracture to his left rip due to resuscitative attempts according to the report. There were also defibrillator electrodes on his chest at the time of the examination.
The report does state Gipson had a reported medical history of drug use but the records were not on file.
The autopsy of Gipson was completed by the Boone County Medical Exmainer's Office on August 26. The opinion if the examiner on Gipson's cause of death is dated for Feb. 25.
The toxicology report was completed by NMS Labs in Pennsylvania.
The Missouri State Divison of Drug and Crime Control completed its invesigation into Gipson's death in December.
