Trump can still run in 2024 election

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Former President Donald Trump faced a Manhattan Judge Tuesday for an arraignment.

Trump pleaded not guilty Tuesday to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, according to the Associated Press.

Trump is the first president in U.S. history to be criminally charged, but despite being charged the former president says he still plans to run for the White House in 2024.

Jay Sexton with the Kinder Institute said he can run for president and that the Constitution is bare bones about the requirements for that office. If Trump is convicted of the felonies, he won't be eliminated from the presidential race.

Sexton says, if anything the case against Trump is working in his favor for his 2024 run.

"Its sorta a solidification of pro and anti-trump elements, that rhythm is already playing out in real time, right now is this specific contingency." Sexton said. "I would say its ultimately helping him with the base of the Republican Party.

Trump is due back in court Dec. 4.

However, Trump isn't the only president that have faced legal trouble.

Former and sitting presidents in the past have face trouble with the law but were never formally charged.

If convicted of a felony, Trump would not be allowed to vote.
