Boone County Sheriff’s Office holds active-shooter training at Midway Heights Elementary

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday held “active assailant training” at Midway Heights Elementary, the office announced on its Facebook page.

“Heights Elementary with the Boone County Fire Protection District, Missouri State Highway Patrol, University of Missouri Police Department, Hallsville Missouri Police Department, Ashland, Missouri Police Department, Centralia Missouri Police Department, and the Sturgeon Police Department. As such, there are several vehicles/personnel from various agencies present, but there is no active incident/emergency,” the post read.

The Columbia Police Department this week also announced it would be doing similar training at various schools this week through Thursday.

The CPD training was publicly announced before a 28-year-old shooter opened fire on staff and school children at The Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, on Wednesday. The shooting at that school killed three adults and three children who were 9 years old. School safety has been at the top of most headlines since the shooting. A motive has yet to be revealed.

Experts and law enforcement said following the tragedy that reporting suspicious behavior and threats can prevent school shootings.
