Emergency services warn of heat exhaustion ahead of this weekend’s Show-Me State Games
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
As Show-Me State Game participants pack up their cleats, rackets and frisbees, they also need to remember lots of water too, according to emergency officials. The heat index for Saturday and Sunday predicted to be above 100 degrees, which could cause severe heat-related illness for someone who isn't properly hydrated.
The Stormtrack Weather Team said Saturday and Sunday are expected to be the hottest of this stretch before rain could possibly cool us down on Monday. Several outdoor Show-Me State Games events are happening Saturday, including tennis, golf, softball and track and field.
Brad Fraizer, Assistant Fire Chief at the Columbia Fire Department, said people who are outside for extended periods of time are susceptible to heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses.
"This time of the year, especially with temperatures and heat index getting as high as they are, we do see a lot of heat-related calls, mostly overexertion," Fraizer said.
Some signs of heat exhaustion are dizziness, nausea and clammy skin.
"If you're outside in the heat for a long period of time and haven't hydrated properly, you could become overheated," Fraizer said. "We encourage people to find cool places to rest and stay hydrated."
