Several factors go into canceling after school activities

Almost all Jefferson City School District sporting events were canceled today because of winter weather.

"I would imagine there are people out there saying, the roads are just wet, we could've played tonight and you know, maybe but we're not going to gamble on safety," Gary Verslues, the Jefferson City School District assistant superintendent said.

Jefferson City High Schools' activity department shared on twitter all activities and practices were canceled today due to inclement weather.

Verslues said there are multiple factors they look at before having to cancel sports or activities and it starts with what the school day looks like.

First, if its a late start then all before school activities are canceled.
Second, if its an early dismissal then everything is automatically canceled after school.
Third, if there was no school all day then they have to make a judgment call.

"We rely on the experts, Missouri public safety, Missouri Department of Transportation, what we're hearing from city and county crews, law enforcement possibly and we also monitor what other schools are doing, we bring in as much info as we can to make the best decision possible," Verslues said.

Verslues says the main focus is teachers', coaches' and students' safety.

"At the end of the day, we want to make sure our staff and our students are safe and that's the driving force in making the decision," Verslues said

Verslues said the district plans to move forward with everything as scheduled for tomorrow.
