Boone County mails change of assessment notices

More than 40,000 property owners in Boone County received change of assessment notices Wednesday, and real estate taxes are likely to increase for many of them.

In a news release, Boone County Assessor Tom Schauwecker said about 3,500 of the changes were the result of new construction, partial valuations, alterations, additions, parcel splits or combinations. The rest of the changes came from a 2019 equalization effort focused on residential properties. In most neighborhoods, the average increase was 8 percent, according to the release.

The assessments are used to determine the value of real estate for taxing purposes. It wasn’t clear Monday how the change will affect revenue for local taxing districts. For property owners with a current tax bill of $2,000, an 8 percent increase would raise their taxes by $160 apiece per year.

The county has a process that allows property owners to appeal assessments they think were increased unfairly.

Anyone with questions can email reval@boonecountymo.org with their name, phone number and a parcel identification number. An informal hearing can also be scheduled on or before June 17.

An appeal after that hearing can be filed with the Boone County Board of Equalization.

Forms can then be filed with the State Tax Commission by Sept. 15 for a State Tax Commission hearing. The State Tax Commission hearing is a formal hearing and a private appraisal is expected.
